August is National Pet Dental Health Month in Australia. The initiative is part of a worldwide effort to reduce incidence of the most common ailment in adult pets: oral disease.

According to veterinary research, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show signs of oral disease by the time they are three. Signs of disease include: persistent bad breath, a yellow-brown tartar crust at the gum line, red and swollen gums, pawing at the mouth and face, bleeding, sensitivity to touch, changes in eating and chewing habits and depression (recognisable as listlessness).

Left untreated, pet oral disease causes significant pain through tooth decay and gum infection, and can pass damaging and even life-threatening bacteria through the bloodstream to the heart, liver and kidneys.

For more tips on preventing dental disease view the preventative healthcare information on our facilities/services page.

2008 Hill's Pet Slimmer Club

Pet Slimmer

Pet obesity is on the rise and it is estimated that as many as one in three pets are overweight.

Obesity increases the number of health risks to your pet, which includes heart and respiratory problems, arthritis and diabetes – just to name a few.

Like humans, most obesity in pets is caused simply by eating more calories than they need. This means either too much food or minimal exercise or a combination of both.

Fireworks and Thunderstorm Phobia

What is a phobia?

A phobia occurs when a dog develops an extreme fear response to a normal stimulus (such as a thunderstorm or fireworks). A phobia can develop at any age and tends to get worse with time. Some breeds are more likely to develop phobias. The most common breed we see with any phobia or other anxiety problem is the Staffordshire bull terrier. Many dogs with thunderstorm and/or fireworks phobia also have other anxiety problems such as seperation anxiety.

Thomas is our hospital cat. He came to us injured and in need of a good home. He managed to work his way under our skin (sometimes literally!) and has been here ever since.
