Tick paralysis
On the 11th August 2007 we saw our first dog with tick paralysis for the season. This is very early and is probably due to the fantastic warm weather we are having.
If your pet is at risk of getting ticks- living near or visiting an area close to bushland, having native animals and alot of trees around or located near the escarpment- it is time to start daily tick searches on you animals.
If you have found any ticks on your pets in the past or live in a high risk area we recommend you use a tick prevention treatment as well. Frontline plus® or Advantix® can be used in dogs every 2 weeks for ticks. For cats the only product registered for tick prevention (ie. the only thing that is proven to work ) is Frontline spray® which needs to be applied every 3 weeks.
But remember that no product is 100% effective, they just add an extra layer of safety, so still check your pets every day. If you notice any signs of tick paralysis the early treatment is started the better. Dogs can have a change of voice, difficulty breathing, wobbly gait, paralysis or vomiting. Cats can have a wobbly gait, paralysis, vomiting or choking.
